What We’re Building
The system we’re building is commonly called a dwc hydroponic system. DWC stands for deep water culture.

Most people look for DWC systems without knowing the method is actually just water culture hydroponics. The addition of the word “deep” just means the system is at least 8 to 10 inches deep.

How Does a Deep Water Culture System Work?
A plant is suspended in a net cup above the nutrient solution in the reservoir. The reservoir in this case is a bucket. As the root system of the plant grows it relies on dissolved oxygen in the water to survive.

In the system we’re building, an air pump (aerator) oxygenates the water. Without this aeration, the nutrient solution (water) would become stagnant and a fully submerged root system would die.

  1. What is the purpose of the air stones??? Why does it need air bubbles? Also, why wouldn’t you use a carbon filter for the water? I’m a complete newbie and I’m trying to keep my bamboo alive. I thought about a fish tank filter to keep the water fresh, but now I’m seeing you have air stones.

  2. I have to say after watching just two of your " DIY " video’s…
" There is a guy sharing the right kind of info…" from simple to beyond, and for us " learn by doing " set of folks!
KUDO’S brother, I signed up for your content ( all of it ) and proud to have done so!
    Respectfully, Seth

  3. The farther I go down I can tell this guy reads his comments an tries to connect with his audience. Great video!

  4. Thanks for your videos ! IΒ΄d like to download your "cheat sheet" but the website is unvailable. Any chance getting this ?

  5. Unfortunately the cost is a lot higher if you’re just starting out. You need to buy nutrients, ph/ec meter, pH down, clay stones, etc.

  6. Awesome video with all the info i was looking for. I tried going to the website for the cheat sheet but i just kept getting a error 😒

  7. you could also just put the air pump on something that is higher than the water line, so in case the pump fails, water doesnt just run into the pump

  8. I would make sure that air pump ie higher than the water Incase a power outage, so it doesnt burn the pump up.

  9. What did you use to mix your nutrients? Do you need to have any pump to keep the nutrients mixed or the air pump is good enough?

  10. PUT AIR PUMP ABOVE WATER LINE, OR IF POWER GOES OFF, WATER WILL SIPHON DOWN INTO PUMP, DESTROYING IT, VOIDING WARRENTRY 😒

  11. Would this system work outside in say my backyard? I was wanting to grow something like strawberries and perhaps corn in a hydroponic system, but I’m not sure if those kinds of plants would be too big or if you can grow something like strawberries where you don’t really harvest the entire plant.

  12. How do you get away with not chilling the water or running a recycling reservoir where you are chilling the water?

  13. I love this video but how do you know when to replace water that has evaporated. Do you just lift the lid and check ?

  14. If the air pump is higher than the water level in the buckets, you won’t need the check valves. Save some money , set the pump on top of a flipped over bucket or box .

  15. Great guide! I’m just looking to get started with hydroponics myself and found this quite useful. Looks like your website is having some issues right now and cannot be connected to, unfortunately. Was eager to check out the getting started guide you mentioned. Thought you should know it appears to be down!

  16. To change water and see water levels I’d install a L-piece followed by a 35cm clear hose like on a waterfarm (ghe). Lifting the lid to change water really sucks later on when the plants are huge
